The Property & Facilities Department (PAF) is responsible for providing a safe and efficient working environment for all University staff and students. PAF manages all building services, sustainability, timetabling and the strategic development of the estate, contributing to the delivery of City, University London’s strategic and operational objectives. The estate consists of 22 mainly freehold properties, with a gross total footprint of approximately 118,000 sq. m (1.3 million sq. ft.).

The Head of Sustainability leads a team of environmental professionals developing policy and delivering engagement activities, to ensure that the university not only remains environmentally compliant but also a leading institution in terms of sustainability. Over the last 10 years, City has established a strong reputation for its management of environment and sustainability issues. This has led to City being ranked within the top 5 UK higher education institutions within the People and Planet University League and the top 200 institutions, globally, for carbon management and responsible consumption within the Time Higher Impact Rankings.

City, University of London has made an ambitious commitment to achieve net zero emissions, across all scopes by 2040. The Head of Sustainability will lead on the development and delivery of the strategy to achieve this target. This focus across scopes, will require engagement and action beyond traditional operational activities, to ensure emissions throughout the institutional value chain are targeted and reduced in a way which supports student and staff experience.

Responsibilities

We are looking for someone with the ability and experience to develop and deliver the University Sustainability Strategy. In order to do this successfully you will need to actively engage and influence key stakeholders at all levels across the University, to ensure sustainability is embedded across all our institutional operations. You will also have the responsibility of developing and coordinating the delivery of the University net zero emissions strategy and climate change adaptation plan. You will also need to effectively engage with a range of external stakeholders including local authorities, sector and other partner organisations. Based within Property & Facilities you will need to understand how buildings and facilities function technically, liaising closely with both the Projects and Infrastructure teams to ensure all our new and refurbished buildings align with the sustainability strategy and are operationally efficient.

Person Specification

Ideally you will be a qualified environmental or sustainability professional (IEMA accredited, or suitable post graduate qualification). You will also have extensive knowledge and understanding of both global and national sustainability drivers and their applicability to the Higher Education sector. Ability to present complex data in a readily actionable format, across all institutional levels will also be required. This will be supplemented by direct experience of developing and implementing energy and environmental initiatives across the range of building types comparable to the wider City estate. Your diplomacy skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse range of key stakeholders will be essential to your ongoing success in this role. Effective time management skills, including the ability to coordinate numerous tasks at the same time, as well as the ability to work to strict deadlines will add significant overall value.
